Building Alliances Introduction

EARLY GAMES

Project Overview

The Building Alliances project is a group project in which, through working and discussing together, we aim to gain a stronger understanding of how work in the Games Industry is carried out. It is a simulated working environment in which different job roles are utilised, the group working collaboratively to create pre-production assets aimed towards a specific brief.

Whilst working towards this brief we will, as a group, decide upon several key aspects that inform our project. These include Target Audience considerations and topics of Research. We also have specialised roles that we will produce assets in accordance with, whilst communicating with one another to ensure that we remain on track and work cohesively.

Assigned Role

I have been assigned the "2D Lead" job role in my group. This means that I will produce a large amount of 2D art for our project. As such I will work closely with the other members of my group to ensure that the assets and concepts I produce fit cohesively with the wider project we are working on.

I will also work closely with the 3D Lead of our group to create orthographic turnaround images and textures for 3D models. Whilst Research topics will be handed out by our Research Lead I will additionally utilise independent visual research to help inform designs and bring new ideas to the table.

My aim is to ultimately create interesting and unique concepts that will bring new ideas to the group whilst working closely with my team members to create a solid aesthetic and style that will help to enforce the themes and story of our project. When designing I will ask for feedback and will utilise feedback to help in the improvement and refining of ideas. I will constantly perform visual research and share these topics with the group, allowing them to assist me in curating inspiration.

Initial Considerations

A part of this project includes the selection of a brief to follow. There are three briefs to choose from: one focused on the impact of Global Warming on Nottingham, one focused on the effect of Microplastics on humans and one on the Reforestation of the Sahara Desert.

As a group, we immediately discussed these briefs, examining which ones interested us the most and generating basic ideas for a game concept.
We came to the decision that we found the Microplastics brief the most interesting of the three, immediately forming numerous ideas for different games based on the theme of microplastics in humans.
With a basic idea down we then created methods for sharing work across group members, with all of us having access to a collective Discord Server in which we can quickly give feedback to one another. We also created a group onedrive in which we can share assets, art and recordings of group meetings that we will attend independently on a weekly basis.
